Born to Write: How Journaling Deepened My Walk with God

Writing down your thoughts, feelings, and life events allows your mind to flow freely—just like the pen gliding across smooth paper. There is nothing like it.
I can spend hours writing. My kids even know how much I love it. If Mom has her notebook, she’s writing—and you’d better not interrupt her train of thought!
One day, my youngest son asked me, “Are you writing a Bible?” I had to pause. To compare my writing to the work of the Bible would be blasphemous… but in a way, I was. Hear me out.
The Bible exists because people chose to write down what God revealed to them—what they witnessed, what they heard, and what He inspired.
The first books of the New Testament were written based on what the disciples saw and experienced.
The life of David would not be known to us if someone had not taken the time to record it with pen and papyrus.
If no one had written these biblical accounts, we would not have the faith-building, faith-renewing, faith-encouraging Bible that strengthens us today.
So how did this revelation change my relationship with God?
Because I realized—God created me to write. It’s no coincidence that I love journals, or that I can’t resist buying new ones I don’t “need.” My first instinct to encourage someone is to grab a blank card and write a message from my heart.
Writing is in me—it’s how God designed me. My words flow best when they’re poured onto paper.
On my hardest days, when it’s difficult to pray, when praise feels heavy, I can still write. I pour out my heart to my Heavenly Father—the One who knows every hair on my head, who loved me before I was even thought of, who has a plan for me to prosper.
Writing becomes my cry, my offering, my way of releasing the weight of my heart into His hands.
Once it’s on paper, it’s no longer trapped in my mind. The more I write, the lighter my soul feels.
Why? Because when I write, I am giving it to God—and leaving it there.
Let’s Reflect Together
Have you ever found peace by writing your prayers or thoughts to God? I’d love to hear how journaling has shaped your walk with Him.
If you’ve never tried journaling, I encourage you to start. Grab a notebook, pour out your heart, and see how God meets you on the page.
