The foundation for growth in any area of life is learning to strengthen where you are weak. For me, that weakness was prayer—plain and simple. I wasn’t seeing growth in the areas I desired. My faith wasn’t as strong as I wanted it to be. Honestly, I was a “Doubting Debby” most of the time. I wasn’t reflecting the person God called me to be, and I trusted Him only sometimes. It was just that simple.

The Benefits of a Stronger Prayer Life

When your prayer life grows, every part of your spiritual walk begins to strengthen.

Here are just a few of the blessings that come with consistent prayer:

  • Deepens your relationship with God

  • Builds confidence in prayer

  • Strengthens faith, hope, and peace

Facing My Excuses

One of my biggest excuses for having a weak prayer life was time. I simply wasn’t making time for God. I wasn’t prioritizing Him unless I needed something from Him—and that’s not how a relationship works. Relationships aren’t one-sided. They require communication from both sides. You pray, sit still, and God responds.

How I Got Started

So how do you start when you don’t know how? I began by waking up at 5 a.m. and dedicating that time to God. I started with praise and worship, then devotion, which helped set the right atmosphere for prayer.

Because I lacked confidence, I struggled to find the right words. But I realized that God isn’t looking for perfection—He’s looking for devotion.

So, I began writing my prayers.

Writing My Prayers

Once the atmosphere was set, my pen began to flow with thankfulness—thanking God for the peace, grace, and mercy He promised me. I wrote about my desires for others to turn to Christ. I interceded on their behalf. I wrote letters to God in the form of prayers, filled with decrees and declarations. I wrote scriptures and made them personal, reminding God of His promises to me. Writing my prayers completely changed how I viewed prayer.

I’ve personally seen God answer the prayers I’ve written—they carry the same power as spoken prayers. As I saw Him move through my written words, my confidence grew. My boldness to pray out loud increased, and I stopped worrying about how I sounded to others because I knew God heard me.

From Writing to Speaking

As my confidence grew and I learned the power of speaking God’s Word aloud, my process began to shift. I started reading my written prayers out loud—and that was a game changer. Often, the Holy Spirit would take over, and I’d find myself praying beyond what I had written. In my eyes, I had become a prayer warrior. I felt like I could pray heaven down to earth. The boldness and confidence I felt would sometimes leave me in awe.

The Power of Prioritizing Prayer

Prioritizing daily prayer has led to answered prayers—for myself and for others—a stronger relationship with God, and the heart of a true prayer warrior. Now, when something comes up, I pray first. When I don’t know what to do, I pray. When worry begins to creep in, I pray.

God is only a prayer away—you just have to seek Him.
